Job Title: Head of Programming
Responsible to: Producer(s) & Executive Producer
Place of Work: Red Entertainment Offices

Expected to attend seminars, events, performances, conferences, meetings, interviews as necessary
Hours of Work: Minimum 40 hours a week, 10-6 daily
Type of Contract: Full time role following 3-month probationary period
Salary: £27,000+ per annum dependant on experience
Salary Review: Annually based on company & job role growth
Holiday Entitlement: 28 days pa (including bank holidays)
Notice Period: 2 Months
Start Date: Flexible – Immediate
Closing Date: 12pm Monday 31st January 2022


Red Entertainment are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and hardworking Head of Programming to work on their continually growing portfolio of UK & International touring productions. The company currently focuses on touring one/two-night entertainment, however it is expanding into producing longer running theatrical productions across the UK and Internationally. Typically, we programme in excess of 300 performances per year.

At Red Entertainment we pride ourselves on maintaining excellent relationships with our partner venues. Good communication is key to the Head of Programming role as well as an integral knowledge and understanding of touring theatre. The team work closely together on the creative process, and we value input from all members of the team. It is important that everyone involved has a passion for the shows and media we create.


Key Responsibilities

The Programmer’s role is to book production tours into venues, maintain relationships with regional venue programmers/managers, research individual areas to focus our productions where they will be most successful and to assist with onboarding new productions.

This role will include but is not limited to:

  • Touring schedule and diary management
  • Developing relationships with venues to assist Red Entertainment’s audience reach capability
  • B2B marketing of productions and of the company
  • Venue Deal & contract negotiations
  • Ensuring Red Entertainment’s front facing programming information is kept up to date and current
  • Maintain accurate programming and venue records
  • Monitor the industry for new products, genres and shows
  • Work closely with venues to ensure the most suitable product is placed to match their goals and local audience
  • Research new venues across the UK and Internationally
  • Monitor and self-supervise time management to best achieve most urgent duties and communicate regular updates to the Producer
  • Visit touring productions at convenient venues in order to maintain a regular and accessible visible presence of the company
  • Bring to the attention of the Producer any opportunities which might be taken to increase the company’s efficiency and effectiveness


Person Specification

Experience & Skills



  • At least 3 years working in the theatre industry either in a venue or touring production company
  • Existing knowledge of theatrical deals/contracts and negotiations
  • Excellent working knowledge of UK regional theatres
  • Excellent writing, proof reading, spelling and communication skills
  • Confident and relaxed when maintaining & building business relationships primarily over the phone
  • Ability to manage multiple ‘products’ and deadlines effectively
  • Highly skilled with Spreadsheets and MS Office skills
  • Highly efficient and organised



  • Two years’ experience programming into a venue or within a touring production company
  • Experience working with theatre managers and programming departments of UK Regional Theatres
  • Contract negotiations and an understanding of theatrical budgets
